Kratos: The Symbol of Strength – Professional-Grade Axe
Kratos, derived from the Greek word “Κράτος,” means “power” and represents the divine embodiment of strength in Greek mythology.
In Japan, most commercially available axes are compact, around 11.81" (300mm) in length. However, when it comes to actual wood splitting, their small size can lead to drawbacks such as insufficient impact force and increased risk of injury.
At Muthos Homura, we’ve developed the Kratos AXE as a wooden-handle version of our full-metal axe, Full Counter (11.81" type) — combining authentic functionality with symbolic power.
Multi-AXE Design
Featuring a three-step geometry engineered to reflect the splitting mechanism of an axe, this multi-AXE design incorporates three distinct axe forms within a single body.
- 1st Step: A sharp angle optimized for easy entry into firewood — 1 AXE
- 2nd Step: Once embedded, the blade forces the wood apart laterally — +2 AXEs
- 3rd Step: Final separation splits the wood fully across the grain — +1 AXE
Engineered Streamlined Form × High-Strength Wooden Handle
The Kratos AXE: Engineered for Power and Precision
The wooden handle underwent over 20 rounds of prototyping to achieve the ultimate streamlined design that meets three key challenges:
- Maintains strength even at a length of 19.69" (500mm)
- Comfortable to grip from various positions
- Efficiently transmits force upon impact
For the handle material, we selected hickory, a member of the walnut family known for its exceptional shock absorption. This ensures durability and reliability even under harsh conditions.
Optimal Hardness and Material Selection for Axes
Backed by extensive experience in cutting tools, Muthos Homura has studied the essential performance requirements for the axe’s cutting edge:
- Impact resistance (highest priority)
- Edge retention
- Resharpening capability
To meet these criteria, the team conducted numerous tests and adopted a tool-grade alloy steel that strikes a balance—not too hard, not too soft—with added toughness (resilience). Compared to the carbon steel commonly used in conventional axes, this material offers significantly enhanced hardness and durability.
Note: As a steel-based component, it is prone to rust. Please maintain the axe with regular oiling after use.
